I remember being in the steam beta when 1.6 was still brand new. I was playing well before 1.6, but I'm obviously referring to it since it's the last great version of CS imo. No game was harder to walk away from than CS 1.6. I can't tell you how many monster pcs I've built over the years, only to end up using all that power on nothing else but counter-strike 1.6, which is hardly the most demanding of games. Nothing else touched it for years, and I still believe this to be the case. It literally didn't matter to me what the graphics looked like in the game. Getting a headshot in CS is seriously like one of the most satisfying feelings you'll ever get in a shooter. I have not experienced a more satisfying feeling in any other shooter than the one I get from totally wrecking a team in a game of CS. No matter how many times you may have thought you've seen all there was to see on these maps, newer strategies pop up, a new spot to bank a nade off of is discovered that creates some interesting strategic possibilities. Never have I played so many of the same maps over and over and over again, and literally not get tired of ANY of them. There's nothing quite like counter-strike 1.6.

I love the feeling of the genuine skill gap that exists in the game, the way you master nade assignments, or clever tricks to enter bombsites or cross specific chokepoints, the boosts that you can perform with teammates, the knowledge of spam spots that can allow you to whittle down the HP of people on the other team without exposing yourself, or even the feeling of clutching a round 3vs1, 2vs1, or even getting an ace.

They all just feel incredibly inferior to CS 1.6 from a competitive play standpoint, and I think this holds true even for the ones that I like or even love. It's why I've never really been able to quite get into the multiplayers of a lot of console shooters for all these years. Another was this TF2-esque desert mining facility. Some even had more elaborate games, like soccer. Some had secret passages, breakable walls, or traversable ventilation systems for the prisoners. Prisoners have to use stealth and guerrilla tactics to take out their hunters, hopefully obtaining a firearm in the process. In such havoc, many other prisoners may try to escape, and then the game becomes a hunt.

Of course, during these proceedings, more often than not, one or more of the prisoners (who are all equipped with knives), will try to make a break for it, or stab a security guard to death and steal his weapon, to use against the rest of the security. The last person standing gets to duel the security one-on-one. Then the security would march them out into some area and have them play games, like simon says. You had the prisoners and the prison security, and the beginning of the round would typically have all the prisoners in their cells, shortly to be released. I always liked playing the weird alternative gamemodes like prison break, which was very player driven.
